US hits Canada, Mexico, and China with significant new tariffs – implementation delayed by 30 days for Canada and Mexico

February 3, 2025

On the afternoon of Saturday, February 1, 2025, the Trump Administration announced sweeping tariffs on virtually all Canadian, Mexican, and Chinese goods imported into the US. Later that evening, Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau announced counter-tariffs on US goods imported into Canada. All the tariffs would take effect Tuesday, February 4, 2025 (with some Canadian tariffs coming into force 21 days later). On February 3, 2025, following commitments made by Canada and Mexico along the border, the parties agreed to halt the tariffs for one month. At this time, the response from China remains unclear.
